Essex County Leathernecks enjoy engaging with other local veteran groups. There is something familiar and easy going when veterans get together. Add this to exploring local battle sights and it makes for a fun and memorable day.
On May 18, 2025 three Homeward Bound Adirondacks employees led a veterans and families event at the Saratoga National Historic Park. The group was treated to a short National Park Service (NPS) orientation film, a NPS park ranger historian speaker and a walk to the Boot Monument.

The night before our event a storm swept through, causing some damage to the trails. The park ranger reported maintenance was dispatched to clear trails however the damage required our group adapt to a new plan, as our original route was closed. All of the NPS staff onsite were fantastic and welcomed us with kindness. Our talented historian shared rich insights and history of the battle which we soaked up. Ultimately our group tested 100% to a quiz where we correctly identified British General Burgoyne’s elaborate distribution of faults to the groups in his Army. The park ranger admitted not many groups accomplish that. However, there is something about a veteran community where we can assimilate a group of strangers, surface our talents and succeed.
Essex County Leathernecks are pleased to spend time with Homeward Bound Adirondacks. We recommend exploring their organization’s offerings and getting to know them. If you would like to attend one of their events, visit our calendar or the Homeward Bound Adirondacks website for opportunities. We value and support local veteran leaders, like Tracy, James and Kris and the community veterans build together.
