Home of the Essex County Leathernecks

Come see why we are the fastest growing Marine Corps League membership in New York

The Final Inspection: Walter Peterson, Jr.

Walter was born on October 24, 1945 and enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 31, 1964. LCpl Peterson served 21 months in Vietnam.

As a Marine, Peterson was trained in Hawaii prior to being deployed to Vietnam. The photos (courtesy of Walter Peterson III) show Marine life with land weapons, new landscapes, air support and camping.

In more photos taken by Peterson, he adapts well to the demands of being a Marine.

Walter Peterson was a long time member of the Marine Corps League. Essex County Leathernecks was his last stop as a League member. He is remembered for his humor, kindness and willingness to help out whenever needed.

Essex County Leathernecks planned to host a celebration for members turning 80 this year. To honor LCpl Peterson on what would’ve been his 80th birthday, we publish this memorial post and raise our glass to celebrate his life. May God bless you on your next journey Marine.

Walter Peterson Jr. passed on May 3, 2025 For the complete obituary, visit https://www.vpfh.com/obituary/Walter-PetersonJr
